The apartment gallery AIRLOCK opened last summer, inviting Chicago-based curators to form exhibitions within the confines of a laundry room. Producing scaled exhibitions requires an understanding of space and capacity while also maximizing the impact of an artist's practice in the presented confines. Institutions often have similar restrictions, albeit at a larger scale. Join Nolan Jimbo, Marjorie Susman Curatorial Fellow at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, and guest curator at this year's BARELY FAIR for a look at his projects within and outside institutions. Jimbo will be joined in conversation with Adia Sykes, independent curator and former AIRLOCK curator and Kate Sierzputowski, AIRLOCK and BARELY FAIR co-director in a conversation moderated by Scott Campbell, Midwest Programs Manager at Independent Curators International.

Many gallerists in Chicago have recently taken the leap into expanding into much larger spaces, thus investing more resources and scale in Chicago's art ecosystem. Join Torey Gaines, director of Anthony Gallery, in conversation with Mickey Pomfrey, owner of MICKEY, and Abby Pucker, founder of GERTIE and Art in Common (which just launched the exhibition Boil, Toil, Trouble) to discuss why larger sometimes is better when presenting emerging artists to an international audience.

BARELY FAIR founders explore the fair’s design as a response to the architecture of traditional art fairs and why they wanted to transform it. Roland Knowlden guides a conversation on the panel’s intentions when creating BARELY FAIR’s form, their observations on how it has functioned, and how their thinking on its structure has evolved.
