A Look at Beginning Programs

2.00PM —

STARTING SMALL

Taylor Payton (SULK CHICAGO), Milo Christie (Weatherproof), and Brian Jucas (PATIENT INFO). Moderated by Olivia Swider (Selenas Mountain)

Three independent space directors share concepts and experiences from their first few years as gallerists in Chicago. Moderator Olivia Swider of Selenas Mountain will explore how Taylor Payton (SULK CHICAGO), Milo Christie (Weatherproof), and Brian Jucas (Patient Info) got their starts, where they want to go, and how they consider scale within their individual programs.

Trompe L'œil and Recreational Re-creation

2.30PM —

SCALED PRECISION

Chris Bradley (Artist), and Dabin Ahn (Artist). Moderated by Roland Miller (Artist, BARELY FAIR).

Join two artists whose practices engage painstaking verisimilitude in this conversation with Chris Bradley and Dabin Ahn. Bradley is known for his miniature-scaled sculptures, perfectly mimicked pretzel rods, and matches in bronze at an exact one-to-one scale. Ahn creates sculptural representations of objects in unlikely materials like a Pink Panther foam board and delicate “ceramic” teacups. This panel will explore the process of life size scale in addition to development of materials to perfectly trick the viewer.

3.00PM — 3.30PM PAUSE

How Chicago is Presented Outside the City

3.30PM —

MIDWEST EXPORTS

Haynes Riley (Good Weather) John Schmid (Ackerman Clarke), and Julia Fischbach (Patron). Moderated by Roland Miller (Artist, BARELY FAIR).

Explore how Chicago is presented outside of the city with three leading gallerists. BARELY FAIR director Roland Miller has a conversation with the founders of  three Chicago galleries about how they represent their home city when presenting exhibitions, artists, and programs out of town, and why Chicago remains their gallery’s home base.

How Small Collections Enter Large Institutions

4.00PM —

PUBLIC SCALE

Michael Darling (Musuem Exchange), Gary Metzner (Collector, Sotheby's), and Ionit Behar (DePaul Art Musuem). Moderated by Kate Sierzputowski (BARELY FAIR, EXPO CHICAGO).

Take a peek behind how museums acquire, and are matched with private collections in this conversation with Museum Exchange co-founder Michael Darling, Sotheby’s Managing Director of the Mid-Western Region Gary Metzner, and DePaul Art Museum curator Ionit Behar.

Presented in partnership with Museum Exchange.

How Multi-Talented People Manage Multiple Roles

4.30PM —

MULTI-HYPHENATES

Marcia Fraerman (Artist, Collector), Jenal Dolson (Artist, Andrew Rafacz), and Francine Almeda (DJ, Tala). Moderated by Josh Dihle (Artist, BARELY FAIR, COLOR CLUB).

Chicago's embrace of DIY spirit seems to proliferate individuals who wear many creative hats, generating talents falling outside of one marked path. Learn about how three Chicago makers balance personal and professional practices and dynamic social roles in this panel on full plates and multi-hyphenate interests.

BARELY FAIR is host to MINOR MATTERS, a small symposium on the economies of scale. The conversations took place at BARELY FAIR inside Color Club's Ballroom space on 20 APR, 2024 from 2-5PM. Special thanks to Sam Clapp and Bad At Sports for recording the talks.
